Trip Overview

This is an adventure trip recommended for people who loves to walk, enjoy nature and peace and learn more about the Inca culture. The most important thing of this walk is that you will get to know part of the real Peru, families devoted to agriculture and alpaca grazing, their stone little houses, typical clothes, ancient customs and, most importantly, appreciate the local lifestyle, which is wonderful and interesting without the presence of many tourists.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • Visit the rural communities of the Lares Valley, which preserve a rich Inca culture.
  • Travel with our guides and support staff who have a great experience and knowledge in multiple trips to the Andes.
  • Walk at elevations between (3048 m. and 4785.00 ft) (10,000 ft and 15,700 ft) with several passes at about 15,700. The last day, stay at the incomparable Machu Picchu, “Lost City of the Incas” with your professional guide.
  • Walk along the Andean highlands (punas), the Andes realm, near a herd of llamas and alpacas.

  • Physical rating: 1 2 3 4 5 6

DAY BY DAY ITINERARY

Very early in the morning. we will leave the city of Cusco to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, district of Calca, where we will start ascending by car until reaching the top of the Sacred Valley. Once we get to the top, we will start descending (always in a car) until reaching the Lares Hot Springs (3,250 m / 10,663 ft) where we will have some free time to enjoy and relax (from 28°C to 34°C) (82°F to 93°F). After lunch, we will start hiking for about 3 hours until reaching our camp in Cuncani (3,700 m / 12,139 ft). During the tour, we will be able to observe the characteristic flora and fauna of the area. We will also have the opportunity to see the inhabitants of the Andes with their typical clothes.

After breakfast, we will continue our trek through the Lares Valley until reaching the community of Wacahuasi (3,600 m / 11,811 ft). Here, the villagers produce the finest fabrics and we can also observe their great skills and brilliant techniques in making ponchos and clothing. Passing through the village, we will start ascending the second pass, the Abra Condorpasa (4,100 m / 13,451 ft).

From this place, we will have an amazing view towards the Nevado Verónica (5,750 m / 18,865 ft). We will descend for an approximate of 1 hour until reaching the beautiful lagoon of Ipsaycocha (4,400 m / 14,436 ft), where we will camp.

After breakfast, we will descend through the valley until reaching the community of Willoc (3,600 m / 11,811 ft). In this place, we will find our vehicle to transport us to Puma Marca (3,400 m / 11,155 ft), where we will visit this forgotten in time metropolis. After a short visit, we will begin descending towards Ollantaytambo (2,850 m / 9,350 ft), where we will be able to admire the several agricultural terraces with aqueducts and irrigation systems in this beautiful valley, located in a fertile valley and protected by huge mountains. Then we will go to the Ollantaytambo station, where we will board a train, which will take us to Aguas Calientes.

Stay overnight at the chosen Hotel.

This day will only be dedicated to visit the wonder of Machu Picchu (2,490 m / 8,169 ft), where we will have a guided tour of approximately 2 hours, and where we will visit the most important premises of the Machu Picchu Sanctuary. After the tour, we will have time to explore Machu Picchu on our own or visit Huayna Picchu (not included in the Waynapicchu tour). Then we will go down to Aguas Calientes (2,160 m / 7,087 ft). Finally, we will take a train to Poroy or Ollantaytambo, where our driver will be waiting to take us back to our hotel in Cusco.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Weather
The average temperature during the day in Cusco and its surroundings generally ranges between 55º F – 75º F. At night, the temperature drops to 40º F and 50º F. Great part of this tour takes place in the mountains, where the weather can change very rapidly. The temperature at night regularly falls to 25º F and 30º F. This trip is planned for the «dry season», where days are generally clear and pleasant, with very little rain, and morning temperatures usually range from 30º to 40º with some frost in tents and icy plains in some places. While trips carried out in April and November may experience a slightly greater amount of rain, rain throughout the day is unusual. We will walk on several mountain passes having more than 4799 m / 15744 ft, so you must be prepared for unpredictable mountain weather.

Upon arrival in Machupicchu, you will note that the temperature is hotter (53.6º F – 84.2º F on average), then we must also have appropriate clothing for the cold and warm areas.
